ABOUT LASIK
WHAT IS LASIK?
LASIK is a form of laser vision correction that corrects nearsighted and farsightedness by reshaping the cornea. Using our CustomVision Laser technology we can also now correct astigmatism! LASIK is one of the most commonly performed elective procedures in the United States due to its quick recovery, accuracy, and safety. With LASIK, it takes only seconds to treat a lifetime of poor vision! 99.3% of our patients are seeing 20/20 or better!
WHY CHOOSE LASIK?
LASIK is the most popular choice for people undergoing refractive surgery. The vision is correct with 3 quick and painless steps. First your surgeon will create a flap on the surface of your cornea. Second, the laser is then used to precisely remodel the surface under the flap using our custom formula which is specifically calculated for each individual. Finally, the corneal flap is smoothed to original position, where it quickly seals itself into place. Vision improvement is quick and there is little to no discomfort involved.

5.
DO YOUR RESEARCH.
LASIK is an elective surgery commonly preformed, but not all surgeons achieve the same results. Do your research! Ensure your surgeon is choosing to use is up to date technology, experienced, and receives outstanding patient reviews.
FLEX AND HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS WELCOMED.
Though medical insurances considers LASIK elective, your Flex and Health savings accounts welcome it with open arms!

2.
IT'S FAST!
To ensure quality, all LASIK equipment has high-speed video imaging to track the position of your eye. If you move, the laser will shut off immediately. Our lasers move quicker than you can! A human has the reaction time of about 20-30 milliseconds. The laser? About 2-3 milliseconds! Our laser is 6 times faster than older generation lasers.
3.
THE LASER ISN'T HOT. IT'S COOL.
When you think of a laser, often the first thing that comes to mind is how hot it is. However, our laser is not hot! LASIK is performed with a "cool beam" laser, which is a high energy laser that vaporizes only the targeted tissue. No heat? No worries!
4.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH...IT'S FAST!
LASIK is one of the quickest procedures you can recieve with rapid results! The actual surgery itself takes about 15-20 minutes for both eyes! When you sit up from the laser, you will be able to see some things better than you could before without glasses and contact lenses. It will almost look like you have wax paper over your vision for the first several hours, but most patients are seeing 20/20 or better the day after their surgery!
FLIGHT READY!
For all our military men & women LASIK is for you! Ready to see like jet fighter pilots? 99.3% of our nearsighted patients see 20/20 after surgery, and 81% of patients see 20/15!

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE
Before your procedure, you’ll be given a small dose of Valium to help you feel calm and relaxed. You can feel confident knowing you’re in the trusted hands of Drs. Stahl and Knowles, two of Dayton’s top LASIK surgeons. The process begins with a staff member placing a few numbing drops in your eyes to ensure you remain completely comfortable throughout the procedure. To gently keep your eyes open during treatment, a soft lid holder called a speculum will be used—no need to worry about blinking.
Using the detailed measurements from your previous examination, your surgeon will tailor a CustomVision treatment plan specifically for you. The procedure involves creating a thin flap on your cornea, followed by precise laser treatment to improve your vision. Once completed, the flap is carefully repositioned, and the process is repeated for your other eye. The entire procedure is smooth, quick, and typically takes just 15 to 20 minutes for both eyes.
THE PROCEDURE
No two eyes are the same. Every person has small distortions in their vision that even glasses and contacts can not correct. It is these subtle differences that make your eyes completely unique to you! Dr. Stahl and Dr. Knowles are pleased to be among the first centers in the United States to offer Wavefront CustomVision™. This advance in technology allows Dr. Stahl and Dr. Knowles to perform a more accurate, more precise laser vision correction offering a level of high-definition vision!
CustomVision LASIK is the result of precise measurements, advanced nomograms, and over twenty years of fine tuning our results. This procedure precisely maps your eye 's unique visual irregularities to include those variables that cannot be addressed by glasses or contacts.
LASIK:
IN THREE SIMPLE STEPS
-
The first step is to create a thin layer, or “flap”, under which the Laser Vision Correction is to be applied. Creating the “flap” can be accomplished using either a precise instrument called a microkeratome, or can be created using a femtosecond laser.
-
The second step is to carefully fold the “flap” over and allow the inner layer of the cornea to be visible so that the laser can treat the area. For most patients the actual application of the Wavelight Allegretto Wave® Eye -Q Excimer Laser only takes 2-15 seconds, depending on the amount of correction necessary.
-
The third step is to gently smooth over the “flap” back into its original position.
The cornea is a remarkable tissue that has a natural bonding quality so that the "flap" adheres back to the cornea without the need for sutures or stitches. This makes the healing and visual recover process very quick for most patients.
AFTERCARE
After your procedure, you'll be asked to go home for a mandatory two-hour nap, which helps jumpstart the healing process. We’ll closely monitor your recovery with several post-operative appointments: the morning after your surgery, one week later, and at ten weeks. These check-ups can be with your surgeon or your local optometrist, whichever is most convenient for you.
In the first few days, it’s important to avoid rubbing or bumping your eyes. You may experience mild dryness or a scratchy sensation, which is completely normal. You’ll receive clear instructions on using eye drops to support your healing.
Most patients who have CustomVision™ LASIK at Stahl Vision are able to pass a driver's eye test without glasses or contacts just a day after surgery. We’re here every step of the way to ensure a smooth recovery and help you achieve your best vision.
